Focusing on what matters

Darrel’s path to retirement

After 43 years working, and two and half years dealing with illness, Darrel reflects on what’s important and the value of secure retirement.

Darrel started work as a labourer back in 1981 as an 18-year old, and straight away he loved the mateship working on the site. He’s seen many changes, and fondly remembers fighting for super, and working on many iconic Melbourne buildings.

“My first job was working on the renovation of the Windsor Hotel on Spring Street and after that it was the Rialto.”

“I went on strike with the BLF (Builders Labourers Federation) before we got the right to super."

"I joined Cbus when it started in 1984 and I’ve been a member ever since.”

Helping his super grow

“My eldest brother was a public servant, so he had super through his job. He said if you're going to get super in construction, try to chip in – you'll be laughing later in life. So I started throwing in an extra $50 a week.”

Life’s challenges and early retirement

Darrel had a good job that he enjoyed. But like many members, he was forced into retirement earlier than he expected.

“I got crook. I've actually had two major operations on my stomach, and part of my bowel removed. When it all started, I thought to myself, ‘what’s it all for?’”

Getting help when he needed it

Darrel’s had a hard slog, with his last two and half years focused on his recovery. As well as attending a lot of medical appointments, he’s spent time sorting out his insurance and super.

Fortunately, Darrel was able to claim on his Cbus insurance cover, which was a big help.

With the help of a Coordinator, he’s set up his Super Income Stream account and is thinking about the potential tax benefits of making a downsizer contribution.

“I definitely don’t need a four-bedroom house anymore, so if I downsize my home, I’ll look at putting the extra money into super so it can keep growing.”

Focusing on what’s important

What’s important to Darrel now is pretty simple.

“It’s just about enjoying life. Spending time with my partner, friends and family. Getting on the road and doing more travelling. Visiting my friends who live all over Australia.”

Having financial security during retirement takes the pressure off and means you can do what’s important to you.  At the time we spoke to Darrel, he was taking off to the Victorian snowfields to visit an old friend.
